How to Check Your RV for Recalls
Updated November 2026
Recalls are free to fix at an authorized dealer, but you have to know about them. RVs can have recalls on the coach (the living part, made by the RV maker) and, for motorhomes, separate recalls on the chassis (made by a company like Ford, Freightliner or Mercedes). Towables can also have recalls on parts like axles, tires and propane fittings.
How to check
- Find your VIN. For motorhomes it's on the dash near the windshield and on the federal label near the driver's door. For trailers and fifth wheels it's on the federal label near the entry door and on the frame tongue.
- Search NHTSA. Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. This shows open safety recalls reported to the US government for that vehicle.
- Check the chassis separately for motorhomes. The chassis maker may list recalls under the chassis VIN or model.
- Call your RV maker or dealer if you're unsure. They can confirm which recalls apply to your unit.
If you find a recall
- Read what the risk is and whether it's safe to use the RV until it's fixed.
- Schedule the repair with an authorized dealer for that brand. Recall repairs are free.
- Keep the paperwork with your RV's service records.
